Paula Ziegenbein found her way into lighting when, as an undergraduate studying electrical engineering, a respected Professor/Advisor encouraged her to take his Introduction to Illumination Engineering course. Initial thoughts about the course helping to boost a GPA soon led to an epiphany; through light, electrical theory (and math) can be a harnessed to affect people’s physiological, psychological and emotional impressions of the spaces they inhabit.

Fascinated by this intersection science and art, Paula had found her career path in lighting; taking on increasing roles and responsibilities in applications engineering, product management, marketing and business development over a 25 year span with Global lighting leader OSRAM SYLVANIA.

In 2014, as LED lighting was transforming the lighting industry, Paula pivoted to lighting design and soon thereafter established HLS’s Boston Studio where she’s honed her design and project management skills in several retail, hospitality, multi-family, educational, commercial office and municipal lighting design projects.

Paula is a 30+ year member of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Progress Committee and Secretary of the IoT committee. She also serves on the Board of Light Boston.
