In February, HLS Principal Shoshanna Segal, IALD, CLD, IES, was featured in New York Real Estate Journal's 2026 Women in Construction Spotlight, which serves to highlight the impact women are making across the NY construction industry.
Speaking on leadership, emerging industry challenges, and her creative pursuits outside of the office, Shoshanna shared the following:
What current or recently completed project, accomplishment or initiative are you most excited about, and why does it matter for your team, clients or community?
I’m honored to be selected to lead a workshop at an international lighting festival — a rare opportunity to mentor emerging designers from around the globe. Bringing diverse perspectives together to create immersive environments matters because it reinforces collaboration, resilience, and shared purpose. At a time of global uncertainty, the act of making something meaningful together feels both powerful and necessary, and it reflects the kind of leadership I value in practice.
What emerging challenge or opportunity do you see shaping the construction industry in the next few years, and how are you preparing for it?
One of the most significant challenges facing the industry is integrating AI responsibly into design and construction workflows. While the efficiency gains are compelling, they raise critical questions around intellectual property, data security, and environmental impact. The energy and water demands of large-scale computing risk undermining years of sustainability progress. I’m focused on adopting tools intentionally, advocating for secure processes, and keeping environmental stewardship central to decision-making.
What is something outside of work that brings you energy, balance or creativity?
Solo travel and making things by hand are how I practice self-reliance, curiosity, and attention.
