This international retailer was melding the worlds of street, skate and fashion long before it was commonplace, tracing a line from product inception to a unique retail experience. The new Boston location’s challenge: a narrow 3-1/2 story footprint, landmark requirements & stringent energy codes. The design solution combines ethereal, thoughtfully integrated, striking lighting elements to mirror the brand’s bold identity, a standout amid neighboring high-end retailers.
Beautifully navigating floor plan constraints, the 2-story entry space, luminously enhanced by LED backlighted ceiling clouds, creates a sense of spaciousness and daylight transition. The monumental stone staircase, reflective glass/zinc box and floating neon store logo provide a dominant visual element on all floors. A custom output, LED slot assembly pierces the top of the box; precisely designed to ensure even illuminance on the stairs while not overwhelming the upper-level floor.
Energy code compliance is further aided by networked lighting controls with automated daylight dimming and the capacity to deeply dim ambient levels for special events, like DJ nights.
About the IES Illumination Awards
The IES Illumination Awards program recognizes individuals for professionalism, ingenuity, and originality in lighting design based on the individual merit of each entry. Judges are selected from a broad professional spectrum, representing knowledge of lighting and design excellence. The judging system is entirely based on how well the lighting design meets the program criteria. The Illumination Awards program is not a competition.
