This international retailer was melding the worlds of street, skate and fashion long before it was commonplace, tracing a line from product inception to a unique retail experience. The new Boston location’s challenge: a narrow 3-1/2 story footprint, landmark requirements & stringent energy codes. The design solution combines ethereal, thoughtfully integrated, striking lighting elements to mirror the brand’s bold identity, a standout amid neighboring high-end retailers. Beautifully navigating floor plan constraints, the 2-story entry space, luminously enhanced by LED backlighted ceiling clouds, creates a sense of spaciousness and daylight transition. The monumental stone staircase, reflective glass/zinc box and floating neon store logo provide a dominant visual element on all floors. A custom output, LED slot assembly pierces the top of the box; precisely designed to ensure even illuminance on the stairs while not overwhelming the upper-level floor. Energy code compliance is further aided by networked lighting controls with automated daylight dimming and the capacity to deeply dim ambient levels for special events, like DJ nights. RIO Lakefront’s expansive shopping center redevelopment required multiple phases, all with aggressive schedules. Areas included: expanding the boardwalk, a performance stage, a greenspace overlooking the lake front, enhanced exterior hospitality spaces, color change façade lighting the RIO entertainment building, and a redesigned pedestrian bridge. Legacy-sourced luminaires were replaced with LED, beating code by 70%. Dark Sky compliant luminaires along the boardwalk provide comfort optics limiting glare and contributing to the outdoor ambiance. Restrictive mounting locations for the RIO entertainment building façade lighting required extensive studies and numerous calculations to achieve an evenly illuminated façade with RGBW color change. A mere four pole locations utilizing a specialized bracket allowed for multiple flood lights per pole, and met the client’s directive to minimize pole quantity. Hartranft Lighting Design achieved their goal of enriching guest experiences by enlivening and drawing attention to the lake front. Guests now enjoy meeting friends for live music, strolling along the boardwalk and gathering in outdoor ‘living rooms’ in this beautifully illuminated, safe, and inviting outdoor venue. Hartranft Lighting Design is a woman-owned business (WBE) with offices in Charlotte NC, Boston MA and Washington DC. In close collaboration with OTJ Architects, Hartranft Lighting Design helped achieve an energizing lighting scheme for Booz Allen Hamilton’s new office space. This idea of the ‘magical moment of connection’ was literally translated into the lighting design with dynamically placed linear lighting throughout the office that intersects and ‘connects’ the open office to the circulation and collaboration spaces. Even illumination of the open office task areas was a high priority to the client, which proved challenging due to the unique lighting layout. After carefully studying the layouts, utilizing batwing optics, and adding a perimeter layer of light – appropriate, even, and comfortable lighting levels were achieved without sacrificing the overall design aesthetic. The client is thrilled with their new offices and happy to present a progressive and visionary image to their clients.
